Building Resilience

The World Health Organization describes stress as the “global health epidemic of the 21st century.” Many of us associate our working lives with 24/7 connectivity, increasing demands, greater responsibilities and fewer resources. Stress and burnout are on the increase and resilience is the capability that is needed to support us to effectively manage the demands of these fast-paced driven work cultures.

Resilience is the ability to manage our physical, emotional and mental resources to enable us to adapt to change, recover from setbacks and to keep going in the face of adversity. It is an essential life skill for human flourishing and something that can be cultivated.

People in the workplace are increasingly turning their attention to mindfulness, an empirically validated methodology to build resilience.

Mindfulness actively builds resilience through:

  • Fostering greater personal accountability for self-directed learning
  • Regulating our attentional capacities to reduce distraction and build calm concentration
  • Being able to regulate our emotions and soothe the nervous system back into balance
  • Noticing when we have moved into stress reactivity and making conscious and wise choices for effective self-care
  • Changing the way that we perceive failure such that we see it as a helpful form of feedback rather than a personal attack on our ability
  • Changing our relationship to difficulty so we are able to view it as an opportunity for self-reflection, learning and growth
  • Gaining compassionate insight into ourselves and others as limited and imperfect human beings
  • Cultivating greater self-compassion to counter the harmful effects of self-criticism

  • 1 hour introductory sessions
  • The Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction Programme, either in the original 8-week format or a shorter 6-week format adapted for workplace settings
  • Away day workshops to build resilience – tailored to suit your requirements
